Our charities and fundraising

The work we do is supported through the dedication and hard work of a range of organisations. More information about our two main charities, Above and Beyond and The Grand Appeal can be found below, as well as details of other organisations which support the work of the Trust.

Above & Beyond

A&B gold starsAbove & Beyond is the local charity that raises funds for Bristol's central hospitals. Each year, we invest some £3 million in projects that make a real difference to patients in our city. We fundraise to improve the hospital environment, fund innovative research, support and train hospital staff and provide state of the art equipment.

Now we are setting ourselves a bigger challenge but we need everyone's help. Our Golden Gift Appeal is raising £6 million to transform the BRI and BHOC to help our hospitals do what they do so well even better.

Patients and their loved ones will benefit as the Appeal will help:

  • cancer patients - the Appeal will fund the SW's first dedicated new adult Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at the BHOC
  • patients needing life-saving and emergency medical care - money raised will go towards a world class monitoring system for intensive care patients. And the latest scanners for a new Medical Assessment Unit.
  • older patients - money raised by the Appeal will fund more welcoming spaces to make older patients' time in hospital as comfortable as possible. It will also fund individual rooms for end of life care.

Every donation, big or small means that - together - we can give patients in the Bristol and the South West the gift of gold standard healthcare.Golden gift

Wallace & Gromit's Grand Appeal (charity no 1043603)

Wallace & Gromit's Grand Appeal, the Bristol Children's Hospital Charity, supports sick children and their families at the Hospital and St. Michael's Special Care Baby Unit, raising over £40 million since 1995.

Grand Appeal 21 years

The Grand Appeal fund cutting edge, life-saving equipment, free family accommodation, child-friendly facilities and artwork, and arts, music and play therapy programmes to transform the lives of sick children and babies from Bristol, the South West and South Wales.

Bristol Children's Hospital is one of the leading children's hospitals in the country, and The Appeal continues to raise funds for new, life-saving medical equipment such as the South of England's first 3T MRI scanner and intra-operative scanning suite, and a pioneering image-guided neurosurgery robot to treat children with brain tumours, and supported the expansion of the Children's Hospital, to integrate specialist burns, neurosurgery and major trauma units.

In 2016, the charity is celebrating their 21st anniversary, and there are lots of ways you can help. Make a donation, host a fantastic fundraising event, or purchase merchandise from the award-winning Gromit Unleashed and Shaun in the City arts trails - all profits are donated to Bristol Children's Hospital. Every year the charity organise two cracking fundraising events - wear your most outlandish trousers for Wrong Trousers Day, or whip up some delicious homemade treats for The BIG Bake! Every penny will help continue to provide the very best care for sick children and babies.

The Cots for Tots Appeal (charity no 1043603)

Cots for Tots

The Cots for Tots Appeal is part of Wallace & Gromit's Grand Appeal, and supports the Special Care Baby Unit at St. Michael's Hospital, Bristol. Since 2007, the charity has worked tirelessly to provide life-saving equipment, cots and new facilities for sick and premature babies from the South West and South Wales, and funded the expansion of the Neo-natal intensive care suite, doubling the provision for intensive care treatment.

In 2012 the charity created Cots for Tots House, a dedicated 12-bed home from home, providing free accommodation to parents, brothers and sisters whose babies are being treated. The House is situated directly opposite the Unit so families are able to stay together and close to their loved ones during an incredibly difficult time in their lives. This is especially vital to families who have travelled from as far afield as Cornwall to receive treatment at the South West's specialist centre.

As more and more babies born as early as 23 weeks are surviving, the unit is experiencing unprecedented demand for specialist cots with life-saving equipment. The charity needs your help to provide this pioneering care, funding equipment and ground-breaking treatments.

The Guild oGuild of Friends logof Friends for the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children (charity no 1068523)

The Guild of Friends has been working to support the hospital since 1948. For many years it provided the main source of charitable funding for the hospital. The Guild consists of a small committee of volunteers which incurs only the most minimal of costs so that all monies donated to us go directly to benefit the children in the hospital. The aim of the charity is quite simply to support the welfare of the children in the care of the hospital. We work closely with the hospital management and staff to ensure that we provide the most effective help possible.

We give £1,000 every month to the social work department which provides subsistence support to families on low incomes whose children are undergoing treatment in the hospital. Families come to the hospital from all over the South West peninsular and the money we donate frequently goes to help with the costs of travel as well as meeting the cost of food and telephone calls.

We fund monthly visits from professional entertainers and magicians who bring fun and laughter to the wards. We support the play department which provides creative and educational activities for both patients and their siblings. On the request of the hospital we provide the money to buy specialist equipment which is urgently needed but which is beyond the current resources of the hospital.
