Hearing Aid Troubleshooting Guide

Symptom

Possible cause

Possible remedy

No sound

Not turned on

Turn on by closing the battery door

Dead battery

Replace battery

Battery incorrectly inserted

Ensure battery is inserted correctly with the sticker removed and the positive side facing upwards

Blocked earmould or tube

Clean earmould or tube

Moisture in tube

Remove the hearing aid and shake the tube to remove moisture. Place somewhere warm and dry for 15 minutes before reattaching to the hearing aid

Slim tube pinched or twisted

Replace slim tube if you have a spare

Not loud enough

Incorrect earmould/dome placement

Ensure your earpiece is inserted   correctly

Blocked earmould or tube

Clean earmould or tube

Occluding ear wax

Have your ears checked for wax at your GP surgery or one of our repair appointments. You may need to   arrange wax removal

Blocked filter or microphone

Change filter and clean microphones, or book an aftercare appointment

Change in hearing levels

Book an aftercare appointment with us for advice

Excessive whistling/buzzing

Incorrect earmould/dome placement

Ensure your earpiece is inserted   correctly

Occluding ear wax

Have your ears checked for wax at your GP surgery or one of our repair appointments. You may need to   arrange wax removal

Old or damaged earmould/dome

Book an aftercare appointment

Sound distorted/not clear

Weak battery

Replace battery

Slim tube pinched or twisted

Replace slim tube if you have a spare

Brushes for Hearing Aids

If you work in a dusty environment, use hairspray often or have dandruff, it may be worth considering purchasing a hearing aid brush to clean the hearing aid microphone ports. You can buy a brush from our private shop that is in the reception of the audiology department in Southmead or St Michael's hospital. Below is a diagram of the brush:

It is recommended to use the brush to sweep away dust and debris from the front and back microphone ports of the hearing aid. Below shows where the microphone ports are usually located on the hearing aids:
