The Paediatric Immunology and Infectious
Diseases (PIID) service cares for children with immune
disorders and severe or unusual infections.
Conditions we treat
- Primary and secondary immune deficiency
- Autoinflammatory conditions and immune dysregulation
- Severe, complex or unusual infections
- TB
- HIV
Services we offer
We run several monthly themed clinics at Bristol Royal Hospital
for Children to assess, diagnose and care for children with immune
disorders and severe/complex/unusual infections. This includes
children who do not make enough antibodies to fight infections.
Some of these children are able to receive antibody replacement
therapy. This therapy can be given in hospital intravenously or at
home subcutaneously. We also provide training and support for these
families.
The service also leads programmes in:
- Specialist vaccination advice
- New entrant (migrant) health
- Antimicrobial stewardship (AMS)
- Outpatient antimicrobial therapy (OPAT)
- Infection, prevention and control (IPC)
- High-consequence infectious diseases (HCID)
- Clinical research
- Specialist training of doctors and nurses
We run outreach clinics several times a year in partnership with
general paediatric services at local hospitals across the South
West region including Gloucester, Bath, Swindon, Taunton, Yeovil,
Exeter and Plymouth. These clinics are more accessible for children
and families who live locally and improve the integration of care
with local services.
We also share care with Great Ormond Street Hospital and the
Great North Children's Hospital for children requiring bone marrow
transplants or gene therapy for particular severe inherited immune
deficiencies.
