Before Surgery & Shopping List
Past patients have
suggested the following items may be helpful to buy or
find beforehand in order to be prepare for your hospital
stay.

Day of Surgery
Once you have arrived at the hospital there will be some general
checks carried out by the nurses. It is
important not to have any food or drink before surgery as
directed at your pre-operative assessment. If you
have eaten or drunk anything after the time dictated, then your
surgery will be cancelled. If you are slightly unwell, even
if you have something as simple as a cold, your surgery date will
be rearranged for your safety. If you are feeling well and
followed the instructions about when you should stop drinking and
eating, your surgery will go ahead as planned.
You will be seen by the consultant surgeon and an anaesthetist
(a doctor who is in charge of putting you to sleep) or a member of
their team. They will go through any concerns you have and re-sign
your consent form with you.
You will be walked down to the operating room, where you will be
gently put sleep by the anaesthetist. They will place some
medicine in a small plastic tube (cannula) in the back of your
hand.
