A guide to hospital
While almost everyone will visit or be cared for in hospital at
some point in their life, hospitals can be a confusing and
bewildering place. The book, 'Going into Hospital? A guide for
patients, carers and families' was written by a surgeon, pharmacist
and psychologist to help people who are going to hospital to
understand the ways a hospital works, the routines and environment.
It is available to buy, and as a free .pdf, from http://goingintohospital.co.uk/.
Where we provide services
Our main hospital site is located at the Bristol
Royal Infirmary. The team works in a number of clinical areas.
Our base ward for in-patient care is usually ward A800. Our
outpatient clinics are provided on level 4, in A407 and A410. As
well as face-to-face clinic appointments, we also offer telephone
or video consultations when appropriate. We perform endoscopy in
the Queens Day Unit (QDU) on level 4. We perform major surgical
procedures in the main Bristol Royal Infirmary building, and we
also provide day case surgery at St Michael's Hospital.
In addition, we provide outpatient clinic services, day surgery
and endoscopy at South Bristol Community
Hospital.
Information on visiting our hospitals can be found here.
Support for you and you family
We hope to provide you with the necessary information and
support throughout your time in our care. For each of the
conditions we treat, we have created a page in this website that
provides information about the diagnosis, tests and treatment which
you can find here. In each page, we
have also highlighted external sources of information and support,
such as local or national support groups.
In addition, patients with cancer are supported by our dedicated
cancer specialist nurses. You can find out more about them and how
to contact them on our team page, here.
