What is the Cancer Enhanced Supportive Care service?

The Cancer Enhanced Supportive Care Service (CESC) at University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust cares for people living with cancer undergoing cancer treatment. We work alongside your cancer doctors and nurses to help you feel as well as possible by identifying and treating any problems caused by the cancer, or its treatment.

We are a multi-disciplinary team including doctors and nurses specialised in supportive care, a dietician, occupational and physiotherapists. We also work closely with other professionals who provide support to people living with cancer, including MacMillan Cancer Support, psychologists and spiritual support.

What is "supportive care"?

"Supportive care" is the management and prevention of the adverse effects of cancer or cancer treatments. Evidence suggests that early access to supportive care can help patients feel better during cancer treatment and help prevent people needing admission to hospital.

Important service update for patients and relatives/next-of-kin:

We are sorry to announce that the Cancer Enhanced Supportive Care (CESC) service will no longer be providing outpatient care from January 2024.

Please note, if you are already a CESC patient and have an existing appointment in the coming weeks, this appointment will still be available to you. We are no longer accepting any new referrals.

The difficult decision to close the service was made in order to support staffing levels in the inpatient Supportive and Palliative Care service ahead of winter pressures.

Please be aware that support remains available via your 'site specific' clinical nurse specialist team - see the tab 'useful contact numbers' for a full list of who to contact. These teams will be able to contact us for advice if required. They will also be able to refer to community palliative care support if you are requiring symptom, psychological and/or emotional support.

It has been a privilege to be involved in your care in recent months. We welcome any feedback you wish to provide which can be emailed to:
