I qualified in Medicine in 1986 from Nottingham University. I was a Wellcome Training Fellow in Clinical Epidemiology at Cambridge from 1993 to 1997. I was appointed as a Senior Lecturer in Epidemiology in 1997 in the Department of Social Medicine at the University of Bristol. I moved to the Department of Community-based Medicine to become a co-Director of the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) in 2003 and I was a member of the seven person executive that runs ALSPAC until 2012. I was appointed to a Chair in Epidemiology in the School of Oral and Dental Sciences at the University of Bristol in January 2007. I am head of the Lifecourse Epidemiology and Population Oral Health Research Group. Our group is leading research programmes in the aetiology and treatment of cleft lip and palate, the lifecourse determinants of oral health and the aetiology and treatment of head and neck cancer. We also work on the lifecourse determinants of cardiovascular risk and the epidemiology of childhood physical activity and obesity. I am Director of a UK NIHR funded Biomedical Research Unit in Nutrition, Diet & Lifestyle (including Obesity) that opened in April 2012
