Alcohol Services

There is a full time Alcohol Nurse Specialist working in the Bristol Royal Infirmary who can be contacted between the hours of 09.00-17.00 Monday to Friday. The majority of our work is with the dependent alcohol users with liver disease.

The Alcohol nurse specialists work with patients who are experiencing issues around excess alcohol consumption. They are available to give advice concerning alcohol detoxification and help manage complex alcohol withdrawal.

We have strong links with Community support services and can refer on to community statutory and non-statutory organisations. We also can arrange for members of Alcoholics Anonymous to come and visit patients whilst they are in hospital who can offer support and information about AA. There is also a SMART recovery meeting held in the hospital once a week.

We can supply information for family and carers and sign post for further information.

Aims of the service are:

Provide clinical advice and support with regards to alcohol detoxification, patient safety and comfort

To improve screening of patients with hazardous and harmful drinking

To facilitate access to local alcohol support services

To identify high impact users and reduce hospital readmission rates

Deliver a nurse-led alcohol clinic

Improved education of UH Bristol staff and others
