What we do
The Children's Audiology Department offers age appropriate
hearing tests for children from birth onwards. Children with
hearing loss receive appropriate treatment and on-going
monitoring.
Further information for patients
We have a mulit-disciplinary team of doctors, clinical
scientists and audiologists to allow us to assess and treat
children of all ages and abilities. We liaise closely with our
colleagues in ENT and the education support service for hearing
impaired children.
Conditions we treat
- Sensori-neural hearing loss (permanent hearing loss)
- Glue ear (temporary hearing loss caused by congestion in the
middle ear)
Treatments we offer
Hearing aids (devices that makes sounds louder) are provided as
appropriate for both permanent and temporary hearing loss.
Cochlear implants (a surgically implanted device that stimulates
the inner ear electrically) are used for severe/profound hearing
loss.
We also offer advice on hearing tactics (how to make life easier
for a child with a hearing loss).
Grommet insertion is carried out by ENT surgeons to remove
congestion from the middle ear and to improve hearing.
