Play centre
The play department provides activities and offers a positive
experience to all children. We aim to make it possible for children
to play and meet their emotional, developmental and cultural needs
while in hospital. The department provides a safe and welcoming
environment for patients and siblings.
Working in close co-operation with the multi-disciplinary team,
we plan to enable children to understand some of the situations and
procedures they will encounter through play preparation and play
distraction.
We are an enthusiastic, reliable and committed team made up of
qualified hospital play specialists and play assistants. Our
department is based at the play centre on level 5 of the Bristol
Royal Hospital for Children where we offer daily sessions. The
department also houses Radio Lollipop and a Scout group, which are
both run with the help of volunteers. Patients will often find
special events being provided to help the children have an
enjoyable experience, having both POD entertainers and Pets As
Therapy (PAT) dogs on a regular basis.
We offer construction and imaginative toys, games, jigsaws,
electronic equipment, such as Wii and Nintendo DS, music and a huge
range of art and craft activities. Throughout the year we organise
a variety of competitions and run special events to mark faith
festivals. We stock, maintain and have responsibility to risk
assess all play rooms and waiting areas around the hospital. While
you are here we want you to have a really positive and fun
experience.
