About us

The Bristol Heart Institute (BHI) was built in 2009 and is a new £61m state-of-the-art hospital, providing a full primary angioplasty service and comprehensive, integrated tertiary and secondary adult congenital cardiac service in one building, for the first time in Bristol. The BHI has been designed in partnership with patients, staff and the public and delivers a full range of diagnostic and interventional treatments for heart conditions.

Located behind the Bristol Royal Infirmary, the new building is landscaped into the leafy hillside facing Kingsdown and has been designed with the patient in mind.  Over the last three years patients have been involved in every stage of the design to make things easier for those who will be treated here, including clearer information and simpler systems. The building opened in May 2009 and will carry out around 1,700 heart operations, perform 4,500 cardiology procedures and treat around 16,000 outpatients every year. The BHI provides care for patients in an emergency  from Somerset, Bath and Gloucestershire.

Within the BHI, you will find the following areas:

  • Cafeteria and waiting area - Level 5 (entrance to BHI)
  • Cardiac Outpatients - Level 5
  • Catheter Laboratories and Hybrid Theatre - Level 6
  • Critical Intensive Care Unit (CICU) - Level 6
  • Coronary Care Unit (CCU) - Level 6
  • Day Unit - Level 6
  • Wards 51 (Mixed Cardiac Surgery and Cardiology) and 52 (Cardiac Surgery) - Level 7
  • Wards 53 (Cardiology) and 54 (Medicine, Respiratory) - Level 8
  • Relatives Rooms - Level 8
