"I was a student nurse in Bristol Eye Hospital from 1967-1969. A
few stories can be told, a few should be told and some must be kept
secret! A great time it was, being naive and young, living in the
heart of Bristol, away from home. I have kept many of the
prize-giving programmes and newspaper cuttings of that time.
I was presented with the junior ophthalmic prize for my year and
very proud I was. I am now one of the sisters at the Eye Unit at
Croydon's Mayday Hospital."
Regan Ruther (nee Rowley), former student
nurse
"I worked at the Eye Hospital for 33 years, having trained there
in 1958. I became a ward sister and then did practical and theory
teaching until I retired, all of which I thoroughly enjoyed.
Some of the staff in the unfurling of the opening banner [to
celebrate the BEH bicentenary] were my students. While I was at the
hospital my name was Hambleton."
