Meet the team

All our staff should wear an identity badge. If a badge is not visible, please ask that member of staff to identify themselves to you.

Recognising success

We give a monthly prize to any member of staff who has been nominated by patients or colleagues for excellent care or service. If you would like to nominate a member of staff, please write your comments on a Patient Experience card (available in main reception, both wards, radiotherapy and outpatients departments).

DoctorConsultant care

While you have treatment with us, you will be under the care of a Consultant. You will see him/her or another doctor, who is a member of their team, at each outpatient appointment. You may not see the same doctor at each visit. If you wish to see a particular doctor, please ask a member of staff. All our consultants specialise in particular types of cancer, and you will be seen by one of the specialists for your type of cancer.

About your chemotherapy treatment

Your chemotherapy treatment will be delivered by one of our experienced nurses. Please do not hesitate to ask the nurses if you have any questions. They will do their best to help you or put you in touch with someone who can.

All our nursing staff wear grey striped dresses or tunic and trousers uniform. The colour of the epaulets lets you know what grade (their level of training) they are. Sisters wear a navy dress or tunic and trousers, and they are in charge of a clinical area or ward. Our matrons wear a grey dress with red piping and a red belt.

We have several specialist nurses at the centre, including breast care, sarcoma, melanoma, sickle-cell and thalassaemia, haemophilia, and other haematological conditions.

About your radiotherapy treatment

If you receive radiotherapy then you will be treated by our team of highly trained radiographers. They are responsible for the accurate planning and delivery of your treatment. If you experience any problems during your treatment or have any questions, please speak to any member of the team.

Women wear navy and white striped tunics and navy trousers, or navy and white striped dresses. Men wear a short white coat with navy trousers. Student radiographers wear white tunics with maroon edging and maroon trousers.

Our team of support staff work hard to keep the hospital clean and organised. Both our wards have a housekeeper, who wears a yellow tunic and dark trousers.

Other healthcare professionals you may meet

You may see other healthcare professionals as part of your treatment. All members of staff will wear a name badge, and do not hesitate to ask if you do not understand their role in your care.

Our patient services team includes receptionists and ward clerks. They will help you with any forms you need to complete and any non-medical queries.

BHOC is a teaching hospital

Student doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals train here. We will ask your permission before any of these students are involved in your care. You do not have to agree, and if you decline this will not affect your care in any way.

Work experience students who are considering a future career in the NHS may be present at various times during your clinical care. You have the right to request they are excluded from any aspect of your care if you wish to do so.
