Access/referrals

Referral should be by letter to BHOC Dietitians (telephone referrals should be followed up in writing), giving the following information.

  • Patient's details - surname and forename; age and sex; address; telephone number
  • Clinical information - diagnosis; relevant medication/ other information including relevant biochemistry; dietary intervention required
  • Details of referrer - name and signature of GP; GP contact details

Referrals are prioritised according to the degree of dietetic urgency. Further information about this is available on request.  

Key areas of practice


Clinical dietetics

Patients with a wide range of illness are treated by:

  • assessing dietary needs
  • designing an individual plan to meet these needs
  • helping patients / carers to achieve any desired dietary changes
  • evaluating the effect of the changes

Education: Good Nutrition makes a difference

We aim to increase awareness of the links between what we eat and health by:

  • helping individuals to make good food choices
  • working with small groups to help develop knowledge and skills in specific areas
  • participating in health promotion campaigns
