Travel advice
- Sun:
Be safe in the sun. Avoid excessive sunbathing and wear a
high-factor sunscreen, hat and sunglasses. Drink plenty of water to
stay hydrated.
- Food and water:
Check whether you can drink local tap water, if not stick to
bottled water. Avoid salads, non-peeling fruit and ice in drinks.
Use your judgement when buying and eating food you have not
prepared yourself.
- Insect bites:
Always avoid insect bites by covering up with clothing, using
mosquito nets and insect repellent containing up to 50% DEET, as
insects can spread diseases. Speak to our Travel Clinic or your GP
about bite prevention and anti-malarials.
- Safe sex:
Always practice safe sex, by using condoms to help prevent STDs,
including HIV and Hep B.
- Air travel and deep vein thrombosis (DVT):
Drink plenty of water on long-haul flights. Do some simple leg
exercises in your seat and move about the aircraft to minimise your
risk of DVT. Speak to your Travel Clinic Nurse about using
compression stockings.
- Safety:
Research local customs, behave accordingly and obey local laws.
Tell a friend or relative where you are going and for how long. If
possible, give them a copy of your itinerary and an emergency
contact number.
- Security:
Leave your cash, cards and travellers cheques in a hotel safe-check
it is secure. Do not carry more money than you need to and keep a
photocopy of your passport at home with a friend or family
member.
- Travel insurance:
Ensure you have suitable travel insurance for your trip and are
covered for any activities you might do while there.
Think about what you are doing at all times and trust your
instincts. Dont take risks that you wouldn't at
home.
