Building a Better Bristol

We are making major improvements to our hospitals, by Building a
Better Bristol, so we can improve the environment in which we
provide excellent care. When you visit us in the New Year, you will
notice a lot of building work going on across our hospitals,
especially around the main entrance to the Bristol Royal Infirmary,
our Emergency Department and at the entrances to the Bristol Heart
Institute.
Please allow more time than usual to come to the hospital, think
about how you will get here and if you can avoid coming by car then
please do. Also give thought to where you will be dropped off and
how you'll be collected.
These improvements will transform many of our facilities and
very importantly allow us to move all the beds and wards out of the
Old Building which no longer meet the accommodation standards that
patients and staff both expect and deserve.
Our partners, Laing O'Rourke, are working very hard to minimise
the inconvenience for patients and visitors but sadly a degree of
upheaval is inevitable.
So think about how you're going to get to your appointment and
talk to us so we can offer you alternatives if you are finding it
difficult. There is a lot more information on our website, speak to
a member of staff or check with your clinic. Please bear with us,
it will be worth it!
- For three weeks from 3 - 23 January, all vehicles will be
stopped from turning into the main entrance of the Bristol Heart
Institute (BHI) on level 5.
- Pedestrian access to the BHI will be rerouted through the
garden area and into the level 5 entrance of the BHI. These changes
are to enable Laing O'Rourke to put in the concrete support for a
large crane.
- From 24 January, ambulances and taxis will be able to use the
level 5 entrance of the BHI.
- Private vehicles should drop off patients at the Bristol
Haematology and Oncology Centre or the drop off zone outside level
2 of the Queen's Building on Upper Maudlin Street.
- Four additional 10-minute drop off car parking spaces have been
added to the Queen's Building drop off zone and the route from the
Queen's Building entrance to the BHI is sign posted.
- Anyone requiring assistance should ring for a
porter. These changes will be in place until the ward
block is completed in 2014.
