Governor role

The role of the Council of Governors

Because we are a Foundation Trust, we have a Council of Governors.  Governors play a key role at University Hospitals Bristol in helping to guide the development of services, holding the Non-executive Directors to account, and representing the views of members.  Most governors are elected from the Foundation Trust membership. These elected governors reflect the interests of the community and represent their members when key decisions are taken at the Trust. There are 27 elected public, patient and staff governors on the UH Bristol Council of Governors. There are also eight Appointed Governors, who sit on the Council of Governors to represent the interest of stakeholder organisations.

John Chablo

Message from John Chablo, carer governor, March 2018

Hi, I'm writing to you as one of the newer elected Governors, having been in the position for less than a year. In that time I've discovered a number of fantastic things about our hospitals - primarily, the great leadership,  and the wonderful enthusiasm, dedication and caring of all of our staff .

Digital Exemplar status
We can be very proud that UH Bristol is one of only 16 acute trusts in the UK to have recently become a 'digital exemplar', leading the way in using technology to benefit our patients and improve our working practices, and  I am personally interested to see the changes being made in this area within the hospital. We are currently trialling the use of more digital technology in many areas, such as when taking observations of patients, with the idea to eventually be running an integrated, paperless system across all the hospitals within the Trust. I know in my time when in hospital with my son, the amount of paperwork involved in just his notes was incredible, so these advances can only be beneficial to all. If you would like to find out more about what this means for our hospitals you can watch this short video: /about-us/digital-hospital/

Your voice is important to us
The Trust also runs regular public events with the next on the topic of 'What Next for UH Bristol?' on Thursday 12 Apr 2018, 6.00-7.30pm, where you will have your say on the future direction of our Trust and its hospitals. Why not come along? It would be good to see you there! Click on the banner below to book your place or call 0117 34 23764. The event will take place in the Education & Research Centre,Upper Maudlin Street, Bristol, BS2 8AE.Doors open at 5.30pm for refreshments.

Agreeing quality objectives
Later this spring, the Board will agree a set of quality objectives for the Trust for 2018/19 and all staff and members have the opportunity to contribute their thoughts and ideas. This short survey contains three simple questions. There are no 'right' or 'wrong' answers - we are grateful for all your feedback. The survey is open until the end of this month.

Come along to a Council of Governors meeting
And finally, as Governors, we are your elected representatives at the Trust. Our Council of Governors meetings are open to all Foundation Trust Members, members of staff and members of the public, and you would be most welcome to attend any of these. The next one is on Thursday 26 April. For more details go to this link
